Who makes the Packers? My pre preseason finale picks
With the preseason ending Thursday night and the Packers (and the rest of the NFL) needing to have their rosters cut down to 53-players by Saturday at 3 pm, I figured why not take a crack at predicting who makes it.
Not only has Ted Thompson squawked at people who have done this, but a lot can change with one last shot to impress under the lights at Lambeau. Regardless, here it is.
Quarterbacks (3) - I have said from day one they keep three. I am standing by this REGARDLESS of Thursday night. Aaron Rodgers, Scott Tolzien, and Matt Flynn stay. Who is #2? No comment...
Runningbacks (4) - Before you act surprised, note there is no section for fullback. Eddie Lacy, James Starks, Dujuan Harris, and John Kuhn (FB) all stick around, easily.
Wide Receivers (5) - The first real question to question. Before people start yelling about "not letting someone get away," for all the border line pass catchers Ted Thompson has let go, where are those guys now? Chastin West? Tori Gurley? I'll take Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Jarrett Boykin, Davante Adams, and Jeff Janis. Myles White, Alex Gillet and Kevin Dorsey could be practice squad bound. I go five because the defensive boarder line questions are tougher.
Tight End (4) - Here comes my only real surprise cut, Andrew Quarless. Richard Rodgers and Brandon Bostick are your two "starters" and Ryan Taylor and Jake Stoneburner give you enough on special teams to stick around. Qualress could easily stay if the Packers try to stash Stoneburner on the practice squad.
Offensive Line (9) - Josh Sitton, T.J Lang, David Bakhtiari, and Bryan Bulaga are your four mainstays. Corey Linsley starts off at center...and to be honest, if he plays well, I think he could win the job. J.C Tretter will be there, too. Derek Sherrod and Lane Taylor are you two main back-ups. Because Tretter starts hurt, they keep 9. I'll say Garth Gerhart. Their always seems to be one offensive lineman who slides through that is a little bit of a surprise. I like Aaron Adams for the practice squad another year. Could help down the road.
Defensive Line (6) - Mike Daniels, Datone Jones, and Latroy Guion are your projected "starers," whatever that means on defense. Josh Boyd, Mike Pennel, and Khyri Thornton are the next line. My number may be low here but you have some linebacker types that can step forward. Also, if the Packers go outside Green Bay to add a player or two, this is the top spot.
Linebackers (9) - Because some guys will move in and out, I lumped them together. This may be the most difficult spot on the team to decide, especially with the new practice squad rule that allows up to two second year players who were active as rookies. Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers start on the outside. Brad Jones and A.J Hawks start on the inside. Jamari Lattimore and Sam Barrington backup inside while Mike Neal and Nick Perry backup outside. Last spot (on the 53-man) goes to Carl Bradford...based on his 4th round draft status. Nate Palmer, Andy Mulumba, and Jayrone Elliot fall through but will they make it to the practice squad? Elliot (in my opinion) deserves to be on the team, but I think they try to sneak him through.
Defenisvebacks (10) - Micah Hyde and Jarrett Bush play both spots, so they end up all together. Those two make it. At corner its Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, Sam Shields, Davon House and Jumal Rolle who earns his way onto the team. Then its Morgan Burnett, Haha Clinton-Dix, and Sean Richardson at safety. Chris Banjo to the practice squad if he isn't claimed.
Special Teams (3) - This is easy; Mason Crosby, Tim Masthay, and Brett Goode all make the squad.
Will this change after the Packers and Chiefs meet? Sure. And if it does, I will be back Friday with a new list.
