NFL Prospect Preview: Florida Safety Matt Elam

Thursday, Apr, 25 2013

Elam is a guy that if you have seen him play you absolutely loves what he brings.  He plays like a guy that you would want on your side if you ever got into a fight.  Elam's 4-picks and 5-passes broken up in 2012 put some numbers on his resume to go with the tape that shows his play.  His downsize is his size.  At under 5' 10", can he match up to the height he will see in the NFL?

Here is my coversation with Cody Jones of FightinGators.com on Elam

I would be SHOCKED if the Packers picked Elam.  As much praise as he has gotten, and deservingly so, if there is a GM in Football that takes guys off his board for being undersized it is Ted Thompson.  With guys like Eric Reid and Jonathan Cyprien fitting the physical mold, Elam shouldn't have to worry if Green Bay isn't an ideal destination for him.

NFL Prospect Preview: Ohio State DT Jonathan Hankins

Thursday, Apr, 25 2013

Hankins is a big dude.  Hands down.  His size and stature screams NT in a 3-4 defense.  Hankins has the ability to be a run stopper and space eater for one of the many 3-4 teams in the league.  On top of that, he does have play making ability which is always a bonus.  On the flip side, defensive lineman have been some of the big busts that show up in the NFL, always something to keep in mind.

Here is my conversation with Ben Axelrod of BuckeyeGrove.com on Hankins

YES!  I believe he is going to be the guy the Packers pull the trigger on in the first round.  With Ryan Pickett getting up there in years and B.J Raji entering the final year of his contract, defensive line, specifically nose tackle, is going to be a big need.  Hankins is an anchor.  I think they go in this direction.

NFL Prospect Preview: LSU Safety Eric Reid

Thursday, Apr, 25 2013

Eric Reid is one of the three safeties in the "not Kenny Vaccaro" group.  His size is optimal for a safety in today's NFL that is being put up against  the big, athletic TEs that are taking over the league.  His interception numbers weren't overly impressive at just 6 in 39-games, but he as a nose for the football.  91-tackles last season and 7-passes defended definitely shine for Reid.

Here is my conversation with Ben Love of Tiger Post on Reid

If the Packers pulled the trigger on Reid in the first round, I don't think it would be over picking cause I believe that he would not make it to them in round 2.  For a while, some felt they could trade back and get him but when he, Matt Elam or Jonathan Cyprien gets picked, I think we will see a run.  Reid couldn't help the Packers from day one.

NFL Prospect Preview: Alabama DT Jesse Williams

Thursday, Apr, 25 2013

Williams story is pretty neat.  With his lack of football experience in his youth, the fact that he has ascended to this level is very impressive.  Some other DTs are in the same category, however,  you have to take into account the kid played at ALABAMA! Top level talent around him helped, but just getting on the field there shows how legit he is.

Here is my conversation with Kirk McNair of Bama Magazine on Williams

Just like every other defensive lineman that appears to be a 3-4 fit, I can't say I would be surprised if the Packers called his name.  His athleticism definitely stands out from his rugby days in Australia.  Out of all the big lineman, he reminds me the most of B.J Raji which could be a good think for him.  His strength and his athleticism together would make me applaud Ted Thompson Friday if Williams is the guy.

NFL Prospect Preview: Georgia DT John Jenkins

Thursday, Apr, 25 2013

Beefy.  At 346-pounds, Jenkins is the biggest of the defensive lineman in the top tier which could make him an ideal fit in a 3-4 defense.  Jenkins will have an easy time eating space but will he be able to control his weight?  That remains to be seen.  Jenkins was once in the 370-380 range.  The "lighter" he gets, the more disruptive he can be as he is athletic for a big guy.

Here is my conversation with Jonathan Branch of DawgPost.com on Jenkins

Like all the defensive tackles in this range, it would not be a shock to see Jenkins in Green and Gold.  Jenkins, more than the others, could put the future plans of Ted Thompson at the position into focus.  B.J Raji is in a contract year and Ryan Pickett's career is winding down.  Jenkins, as a NT, could be the future if the Packers go that way.
