Fiers Tosses Gem as Brewers Beat Dodgers

In his first start since 2012 Mike Fiers worked eight strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five as Milwaukee beat Los Angeles 4-1 Saturday night at Miller Park.  The Brewers (65-52) turned to Fiers (W, 1-1) for the start in place of injured hurler Matt Garza.  Fiers first stint in the majors this season came back in June, with four relief appearances where he compiled a 0-1 record with a 2.57 ERA in seven innings.  Pinpoint command and an assault on the strike zone was the key for Fiers as he tossed 69 of his 101 pitches across for strikes.  His lone blemish was a solo homerun off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez in the fourth inning.  Milwaukee's bats were able to touch-up former Brewer Zack Grienke (12-8) for four runs on eight hits over six innings.  Khris Davis homered in the second for his 19th of the year to stake the Crew to an early 2-0 lead.  Grienke would then surrender another long ball this time to Carlos Gomez in the sixth.  Gomez was able to turn on an inside off-speed pitch and bang it off the left field foul pole for his 18th homerun of the season to push the lead to 3-1.  Aramis Ramirez capped the two-run Brewer sixth with an RBI single.  With the win and losses by both the Pirates and Cardinals, Milwaukee pushed its lead in the NL Central to 2.5 games over Pittsburgh and 3 games ahead of St. Louis.  The Brewers look for the sweep over the Dodgers tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m. the pre-game show begins at 12:35 on 1150-WHBY.
