Packers extend Jordy Nelson
Training camp opened with a boom Saturday morning in Green Bay. Not because of the action on Ray Nitschke Field, but because of the news that quickly circulated surrounding wide reciever Jordy Nelson.
Nelson agreed on a four-year contract extension with the Packers Saturday morning before practice began.
"I broke the news to the wideouts and the quarterbacks" Nelson told reporters after practice. "Just wanted them to be the first ones to know, that way they didn't have to find out when they came back in (the locker room). We got it done right before practice. I was glad to do that. That way I didn't have to worry about it when I was out there."
Nelson was seen exchanging smiles and handshakes during a couple of the teams breaks.
Multiple media outlets are reporting the deal to be worth $39-million with roughly $14-million guranteed. Nelson was entering the final year of a 3-year extension he signed in 2011 that locked up him through 2014.
Nelson has made comments in the past along the lines of having more money he could ever spend. However, for him, it isn't the money that is the big deal. It's what it means.
"You want to be respected in this league. A lot of things get done the wrong way because people think we're greedy, that we should be playing this game for $100-thousand or whatever. It's your value and is based off of any other business. You're gonna want to be paid what your value is to this team and in your business. It's no different than any other job."
In 2011, when Nelson signed his first extension with the Packers, many speculated that he was grossly under pair. For Nelson, he didn't see it that way.
"If you look at what I did before I did my first extension, I had a good playoff run and that was pretty much it. So that was the decision we made. Now it's a different situation because the numbers I've had the last three years compared to the numbers I had the three years prior are completely different."
Some may try to argue that by taking a bigger deal, Nelson has changed from what he use to believe. He states that is not the case.
"I think (his numbers) is what change. My mindset of how the business works or the approach of it hasn't, it's just the numbers and where you stand."
Nelson is now under contract through the 2018 season.
