Brewers beat Cardinals, avoid early sweep

Wily Peralta allowed a run on six hits and won for the second time (2-0) this season, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

After scoring just one run in the first two games of the series, the Brewers used a pair of St. Louis errors to score four un-earned runs and finish 4-2 on the home stand.

The Cardinals lost pitcher Joe Kelly in the top of the fifth after he tried to leg out a hit and suffered a hamstring injury.  Sean Maness took over on the mound for the Cardinals and surrendered a 2-run single off the bat of Jonathan Lucroy in the bottom of the fifth.

Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez also had run scoring hits for the Brewers.

After Peralta left for the Brewers in the 7th, Will Smith, Tyler Thornburg and Francisco Rodriguez finished off the victory.

Considering the Cardinals recent dominance of the Brewers, Wednesday’s victory was a big one.  Although manager Ron Roenicke tried to downplay the significance by saying they’re not chasing the Cardinals.

The Brewers will open a 4-game road series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates tonight.  Yovani Gallardo (2-0, 0.96 era) gets the start for the Brewers.  Edinson Volquez (0-0, 1.29 era) gets the nod for the Pirates.
