Panthers draw postseason ban

After playing in the NCAA Tournament this past season, Rob Jeter’s UW-Milwaukee Panthers won’t have that chance next year.

The University has been informed by the NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance that it was denied its final appeal of a postseason ban for 2014-15 because of cumulative Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores.

That means the Panthers won’t be allowed to compete in both the Horizon League Tournament or the NCAA Tournament.  UWM won the Horizon League tournament last season, earning a spot in the 68-team NCAA Field.  They lost a second round game to Villanova.

The men’s basketball score for the current four-year 2012-13 cycle was 908, which fell below the mandated minimum of 930.

The penalty applies only to the 2014-15 postseason and only applies to the men’s basketball team.

As a part of the ban, UWM will also have to replace four hours of practice each week with four hours of academic activities, with basketball-related activities being limited to five days instead of six.
